From Europe to a variety of World Literatures and Cultures in English. The AISCLI Summer School aims at widening the competence of BA postgraduate students (also those who wish to become teachers, educators, cultural mediators, translators), doctoral students and PhD holders in the field of postcolonial theories, literatures and cultures.
This wider perspective on African, Caribbean, Canadian, Pacific and Asiatic artistic and intellectual productions - in the form of poetry, prose, drama, music, figurative art, architecture and cinema - will be the focus of a series of lectures, seminars and workshops held by academics, who are expert and have publications in those fields.

Much has been said about the connection between chaos theory in science and in recent literature and philosophical thinking, particularly about the way in which they talk to each other in postmodern culture. Our wanting to look at contemporary sites of chaos, as the title of this volume states, is motivated by the will to face these chaotic times, to try and understand what chaos may mean, and also to ask why looking at chaos may be interesting for postcolonial studies scholars, writers and readers.
The book stems from the work of AISCLI and is published by Aracne editrice.

Cultures and Imperialisms 2013
The next AISCLI conference will be held in Rome at Università Roma Tre (17-18 January 2013). It will discuss the continuing relevance of Edward Said's Culture and Imperialism (1993) on the twentieth anniversary of its publication, and read it against the contemporary literary, cultural and political scene.

Contemporary Sites of Chaos in the literatures and arts of the postcolonial world

The 5th AISCLI conference intends to explore a variety of chaotic experiences which have become the object of aesthetic intervention, not only in anglophone literatures, but also in cinema, photography, music, and the performative and visual arts of the postcolonial world.
The focus is on the contemporary: we ask how art registers, reacts to, responds, rebels against, endorses, elaborates, dissects, analyzes, understands, interprets, represents today's sites of chaos.
The deadline for submission of paper proposals is 30 April 2011.

This seminar is an interdisciplinary forum for a critical investigation of the multi-ethnic topography of British culture. The focus is on the articulation of new identities and forms of third millennium citizenship as prefigured, for example, in Paul Gilroy's idea of "conviviality" and Stuart Hall's adhesion to a "civic nationalism." In an increasingly fruitful pairing between transculturality and interdisciplinarity, we bring together perspectives from literature, cinema, theatre and the visual arts, particularly through the work of authors of African and Caribbean origins. Multi-ethnic Britain showcases how all arts concur in representing, performing, dramatising, staging, picturing and sounding identity, combining narrative patterns with performative and visual strategies, thus leading to the formation of syncretised formats.

AISCLI is pleased to announce the first Postgraduate Essay Prize
The competition is open to any young Italian scholar registered for a postgraduate degree or having recently completed a postgraduate degree in Italy or abroad. It is not compulsory for candidates to be AISCLI members to enter the prize.
It involves the submission of an essay in English on the topic of our next conference - "Contemporary Sites of Chaos in the Literatures and Arts of the Postcolonial World" which will be held at the Università degli Studi di Napoli - L'Orientale, 29-30 September 2011 (see www.aiscli.it). The essay should be between 5500 and 7500 words long, including bibliographic citations and footnotes, and presented in accordance with the style guidelines of the MLA.
Haïti: Une nation et sa narration / A Nation and Its Narration
Il direttivo dell'AISCLI, che ha iniziato il proprio mandato nel gennaio 2010 nei giorni in cui Haiti è stata colpita dal terremoto, ha voluto segnalare l'attenzione culturale (oltre che umana) dell'associazione per il primo paese che è si è ribellato alla schiavitù e alla dipendenza coloniale proponendo alla rivista ll Tolomeo un numero sulla letteratura e cultura haitiana. Il risultato è questo splendido volume intitolato Haïti: Une nation et sa narration / A Nation and Its Narration, a cura di Alessandro Costantini e Marie-Hélène Laforest.

Il nuovo direttivo AISCLI ha iniziato il proprio mandato nel gennaio 2010 nei giorni in cui Haiti è stata colpita dal terremoto. Ci è sembrato di non poter restare indifferenti all'orrore che ha riproposto scenari di sofferenza ben più tragici, storicamente radicati e complessi di quelli causati dal sisma. Abbiamo pensato di dare un duplice segno della nostra attenzione intellettuale e culturale (oltre che umana) per il primo paese che è si è ribellato alla schiavitù e alla dipendenza coloniale destinando una piccola parte delle quote associative a un intervento in sostegno della popolazione locale e proponendo alla rivista ll Tolomeo un numero interamente dedicato alla letteratura e cultura haitiana.
